Dr. Aung-Zaw Phoo is a therapeutic optometrist with glaucoma certification. He specializes in hard-to-fit contact lenses for patients with irregular corneas as a result of keratoconus, post-refractive surgery and dry eyes. In addition, he is actively involved with the research and development of specialty contact lenses and contact lens solutions. Dr. Phoo also specializes in providing low vision services to the visually impaired.
Dr. Phoo is a graduate from the Richard Stockon College in New Jersey where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Phoo attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Science. It was also at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where Dr. Phoo received his Doctorate of Optometry.
Dr. Phoo has served as an adjunct assistant professor for the University of Missouri, St. Louis – College of Optometry. Dr. Phoo was appointed to the position of Director of Continuing Education on the board of the San Fernando Valley Optometric Society.
Dr. Phoo completed externships at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia with a concentration in pediatric and binocular vision including vision therapy, as well as at the OMNI Eye Center in New York and New Jersey for ocular pathology.
Dr. Phoo is originally from Burma (now Myanmar) and came to the United States as a young teenager. As someone who is from a developing nation, humanitarian services are something that he holds dear to his heart. He has volunteered with VOSH – International on an eye care mission to Mexico in 2003, and with the Give the Gift of Sight Foundation on an eye care mission to Honduras in 2006. Most recently he traveled on an eye care mission to Guatemala in 2007.
